Release history
Changelog
Notable Scanworker changes. Versions follow the X.Y.Z scheme.
1.3.1 24 August 2026
Fixed
- The Scanworker overview now keeps updating reliably after rare WebSocket failures. The server isolates failed connections; the browser detects silent connections, reconnects with bounded backoff, and adds an HTTP fallback plus an immediate refresh when returning to the tab.
1.3.0 24 August 2026
Added
- Duplex jobs now remove a confidently blank final page before publishing combined and searchable documents. The default-on behavior can be disabled with
REMOVE_BLANK_DUPLEX_LAST_PAGE=false; the removed page remains available as a separate recoverable PDF artifact.
- After all follow-up processing has finished, the retained page can be restored from job history with one click to the combined, Fast, VLM, and Vision PDFs. The standalone recovery PDF remains available.
1.2.1 21 August 2026
Added
- The bilingual installation page now links the exact GPL source archive and checksum for the macOS controller plus the standard Debian
.dsc and .tar.xz source-package files. No redundant Debian ZIP is produced.
Fixed
- Debian source archives no longer accidentally contain the temporary
.deb-build-marker file used to identify newly built artifacts.
1.2.0 19 August 2026
Fixed
- A dedicated input watcher now discovers and pairs duplex scans and complete PDFs during long-running OCR. New jobs are persisted immediately and then processed in FIFO order.
- Fast searchable PDFs now apply every text orientation detected by OCRmyPDF, correcting low-confidence 90- and 180-degree rotations that previously left reverse-side pages upside down.
1.1.1 17 August 2026
Changed
- The bilingual project website now explains the distinct roles of OCRmyPDF/Tesseract, PaddleOCR-VL, and the optional Apple Vision path, including the supporting Poppler and pikepdf steps.
- Homebrew artifact publishing now allows up to five minutes for uploaded files to become visible through the public download path.
1.1.0 13 August 2026
Added
- Separate duplex and single inputs automatically merge two simplex passes or send an already-complete PDF directly to OCR; existing
INPUT_DIR configurations remain valid.
- PDF rows provide quick actions for adding a document to the shared Append or OCR selection.
- The dashboard shows host load, CPU count, and active Tesseract processes and marks running jobs during heavy OCR load.
Changed
- OCR subprocesses run at reduced CPU priority and, on Linux, idle IO priority so the dashboard and host remain responsive under load.
- Local Tesseract section detection is bounded independently of remote Apple Vision parallelism by the local CPU count or
VISION_SECTION_JOBS.
1.0.8 13 August 2026
Fixed
- Above the responsive 900-pixel breakpoint, browsers no longer break text inside words; narrow layouts retain emergency wrapping for long content.
1.0.7 04 August 2026
Fixed
- The responsive layout now switches to its single-column presentation through 900 CSS pixels. Firefox had applied the previous 800-pixel rule correctly, but the two-column hero remained cramped between 801 and 900 pixels.
1.0.0 02 August 2026
Added
- The free controller app shows service versions and log paths and can start, stop, and restart individual services or all of them.
scanworker-doctor checks architecture, versions, service state, configuration, local ports, logs, and legacy-installation conflicts without inspecting documents or secrets.
Changed
- Controller-guided migration installs and validates the Homebrew replacement before stopping legacy PKG services and preserves the configuration and document tree.
0.18.2 02 August 2026
Fixed
- “Open in Terminal” in the missing OCR prerequisites alert now reliably opens and runs the Homebrew command as a temporary
.command file. The former Terminal automation could open an empty window.
0.18.1 01 August 2026
Fixed
- The website now uses its single-column layout through 800 CSS pixels and switches to multiple columns at 801 pixels.
- Every page now appends the release version to its stylesheet URL so browsers and CDN nodes do not retain the former 780-pixel rule after a deployment.
0.18.0 01 August 2026
Added
- The macOS menu bar app now shows whether the worker, web dashboard, and both Apple Vision services are running, loaded, stopped, or not installed.
- Individual or all applicable services can be started and stopped from Settings. Changes use macOS administrator authorization and are restricted to the four bundled
launchd services.
0.17.1 01 August 2026
Fixed
- The status page could get permanently stuck without further live
updates after a single unexpected error while building a status
snapshot, even though the WebSocket connection kept showing
"Live". The background push loop now logs the error and keeps
retrying instead of dying.
0.15.5 31 July 2026
Fixed
- The Apple Vision recognized-text sidecar could be produced but never showed up in the dashboard's artifact list.
0.15.4 31 July 2026
Fixed
- A document moved to Error or Trash could not be moved back out again by an operator connected over SMB, because it kept the restrictive permissions of the original scan. Every move now fixes the file to group-writable, and Scanworker's own processes now default new files to group-writable as well.
0.15.3 31 July 2026
Fixed
- "Append PDFs" and "Recognize text" could occasionally show a page-count-mismatch error in job history even though the operation itself had already completed successfully.
0.15.2 31 July 2026
Added
- "Append PDFs" and "Recognize text (no merge)" now accept PDFs from anywhere in the library except Trash, not only Incoming.
- "Recognize text" now refuses to re-run OCR on a PDF that already has recognized text, naming the file instead of processing it silently.
0.15.1 31 July 2026
Fixed
- A duplex pair found automatically by the background worker now moves to "Processing" for the whole merge/OCR duration, matching the manual actions.
0.15.0 31 July 2026
Added
- "Append PDFs" now runs its result through the same OCR pipeline (fast Tesseract text, PaddleOCR-VL enhancement, Apple Vision) as duplex OCR and single-PDF recognition, instead of producing a raw merged PDF with no text layer.
- PDFs selected for "Queue duplex OCR", "Append PDFs", or "Recognize text (no merge)" now move into a new "Processing" state the moment the action starts, with a matching filter and summary card in the PDF library.
0.14.4 31 July 2026
Fixed
- Apple Vision's invisible searchable-text layer was silently broken for every page ever produced by it, due to an invalid PDF instruction. Vision-recognized PDFs now contain real, extractable, correctly positioned text.
0.14.3 31 July 2026
Added
- The PDF library's View filter is now multi-select and tells the three output artifacts apart (Combined, PaddleOCR-VL Enhanced, Apple Vision), so several can be shown together — useful for comparing OCR engines side by side.
Fixed
- PaddleOCR-VL enhancement and Apple Vision recognition now start as soon as the merged PDF exists, instead of waiting for fast Tesseract OCR to finish first — all three OCR pipelines now run concurrently.
0.14.0 31 July 2026
Added
- "Recognize text (no merge)": select one or more already-complete single-sided PDFs in the "Combine PDFs" panel and send each straight to OCR, without needing a duplex merge first.
0.13.1 30 July 2026
Fixed
- The 0.13.0 autostart-restore behavior on upgrade now correctly checks all three background services instead of just one, and relaunches the menu bar app afterward if it was running before the upgrade.
0.13.0 30 July 2026
Added
- The macOS installer no longer re-asks whether to start services on every upgrade. It now remembers whether they were running before and silently restores the same state; the interactive "Start Now / Not Now" prompt only appears on a genuinely first-time install.
0.12.0 30 July 2026
Added
- Apple Vision OCR now detects a page's layout sections (columns, blocks) and recognizes each one individually instead of always sending the whole page at once, improving accuracy on multi-column and other complex-layout pages. Simple single-column pages are unaffected and still use one request.
0.10.3 30 July 2026
Added
- The menu bar app now warns when the OCRmyPDF/Tesseract prerequisites are missing, with the required
brew install command shown ready to copy or run directly in Terminal.
0.10.1 30 July 2026
Changed
- The Settings tab's Apple Vision concurrency control now also accepts an exact value typed into a text field, up to 1000, instead of only incrementing one at a time.
0.10.0 30 July 2026
Changed
- Apple Vision's default concurrent-OCR-task limit is now 8 (was 2) for new installs. The Settings tab's concurrency control now allows up to 64 (was 32), matching what the service itself already accepted.
0.9.1 30 July 2026
Added
- The macOS installer now asks, when run interactively, whether to start the Scanworker and Apple Vision services right away or at the next login/boot.
0.9.0 30 July 2026
Added
- Job history now shows the actual error message for failed jobs, not just "failed".
- Job history supports multi-select with a "Delete selected" button to remove several completed entries at once (the underlying PDFs are kept, same as single delete).
Fixed
- A job could occasionally fail instantly with a missing-file error right after merging; the merge-and-finalize step now retries automatically before giving up.
0.8.8 30 July 2026
Fixed
- Per-job working subdirectories (created while a job runs) are now reliably group-writable, fixing an issue where an operator connected over SMB could not move or delete files in the Error or work-in-progress folders.
0.8.7 30 July 2026
Added
- A "Quit Scanworker" button in Settings, next to "Start at login", with a confirmation dialog clarifying that only the menu bar client closes while the background services keep running.
0.8.6 30 July 2026
Fixed
- The macOS installer could occasionally fail with an "Input/output error" while replacing an existing install; it now retries briefly before giving up.
0.8.5 30 July 2026
Fixed
- The Processed, Output, Error, and Trash directories are now reliably group-writable, fixing an issue where an operator connected over SMB could see files but not move, rename, or delete them.
0.8.4 30 July 2026
Fixed
- The administrator authorization prompt for Settings changes now always appears in front of the Settings window instead of possibly behind it.
- The macOS installer now writes a persistent log file (
/Library/Logs/Scanworker/install.log) so a failed install can be inspected afterward.
0.8.3 30 July 2026
Fixed
- The Settings window is now resizable and tall enough by default to show every element without clipping.
- Path and Apple Vision concurrency changes are now applied through a single "Apply" button instead of triggering an authorization prompt on every individual click.
0.8.2 29 July 2026
Added
- The Processed, Output, Error, and Trash directories can now be configured independently of the scan root.
- The Settings tab exposes all six document paths with a folder picker each, and Apple Vision's concurrent-OCR-task count can be changed directly from Settings.
Fixed
- A path-validation bug that rejected every path as "not a safe document directory" is fixed.
- The macOS installer now quits a running Scanworker menu bar instance before installing, instead of potentially failing with its binary in use.
0.8.1 29 July 2026
Added
- The Settings tab can now set the scan root and input directory directly with a folder picker, applied through the standard macOS administrator authorization prompt (Touch ID or password).
- The Settings tab shows Apple Vision's configured concurrent-OCR-task count alongside a recommended value for the Mac it is running on.
0.8.0 29 July 2026
Added
- Job history now shows total duration and average per-page OCR duration for every completed job.
- The menu bar app's Settings and About are now one window with two tabs; the Settings tab shows all configured document paths plus an "Open Dashboard" button.
- The menu now shows a lightweight dashboard reachability status line at the top, refreshed each time the menu opens.
Changed
- Settings such as menu bar icon visibility and autostart are confirmed to persist across uninstall and reinstall.
0.7.0 29 July 2026
Added
- Native macOS menu bar companion app (
Scanworker.app), installed into /Applications alongside the existing worker/web launchd services. It opens the dashboard and shows About and Settings, without starting, stopping, or otherwise controlling the background services itself.
- Settings toggles for menu bar icon visibility and login-time autostart, enabled by default.
- Single-instance enforcement: reopening the app while it is already running activates the existing instance instead of starting a second process.
- A genuine Universal 2 menu bar binary, signed and notarized by Apple alongside the Apple Vision service.
0.6.4 29 July 2026
Added
- Operating-system-aware download picker on the project website, defaulting to the visitor's platform (macOS, Debian, Windows) with a manual override.
- A Windows section on the installation page with a "coming soon" notice in place of a nonexistent download.
0.6.3 28 July 2026
Added
- One signed Universal 2 installer for Intel and Apple silicon with selectable Scanworker and Apple Vision components.
- Native Apple Vision OCR service for macOS with optional Bearer authentication, usable by Debian and macOS clients on the trusted LAN.
- Apple Vision listens on the Mac's LAN interfaces by default. Authentication is temporarily disabled for initial trusted-LAN operation and remains configurable.
- Durable Vision queue with retry, cancellation, manual retry, page progress, ETA, and service health.
- Separate Vision text/layout sidecar and searchable PDF with a positioned invisible text layer.
Fixed
- Out-of-order parallel Tesseract page messages can no longer display a premature 100% and zero-second remaining estimate.
- Installing Apple Vision alongside Scanworker now automatically enables the local Vision client on that Mac.
- Apple Vision now processes independent PDF pages concurrently up to the capacity advertised by the Mac.
0.5.0 27 July 2026
- Manual duplex enqueueing, sortable PDF library, separate queue history, and recoverable Trash.
0.4.1 27 July 2026
- Explicit page-count mismatch notices and safe document moves to Trash.
